Your great-great-grandfather, he cleared the land
Your great-grandfather, he worked the land
And then your grandfather made money from the land
And then your father, he sold it so he could become a bureaucrat

And as for you, buddy — you no longer know what you’re going to do
In your little one-bedroom, overpriced, cold in the winter
Sometimes you wish you could buy a place
And at night you dream of having your own little piece of land

Your great-great-grandmother, she had fourteen children
Your great-grandmother had just about as many
And then your grandmother had three; that was plenty
And then your mother didn’t want any; you were an accident

And as for you, sweetie, you take new partners all the time
And when you mess up, you save yourself with an abortion
But there are mornings you wake up in tears
After dreaming in the night of a big table surrounded by children

Your great-great-grandfather lived through the Depression
your great-grandfather pinched every penny
And then your grandfather, amazingly, became a millionaire
Your father inherited that, and stuffed it all in his RRSP [IRA].

So now you, youngster, you owe your ass to the government
No way of getting a loan from a bank
So to keep a lid on your fantasy of holding up a bank
You read books about living with simplicity.

Your great-great-grandparents, they knew how to party
Your great-grandparents, they danced up a storm at night
And then your grandparents, they were there for Sixties pop
For your parents, it was disco — that’s where they met

And now you, buddy, what do you do with your evenings?
Turn off the TV–you can’t just stay home.
Fortunately in life, some things refuse to change
Put your best clothes on, because tonight we’re going dancing.
